SENSATIONAL RALLY WIN FOR YOUNG WELSH PAIR

On Friday, Team Cameron took the long journey north - from South Wales to Cockermouth in Cumbria - to compete in Saturday’s Malcolm Wilson Rally.

On arrival, as the car was being taken off the trailer, it was apparent there was a problem with the clutch. Frantic efforts were made to locate a new one and eventually, with the help of M-Sport and a guy called Kevin, a replacement was found. Paul of P&R Benn then came to the rescue by allowing the team to use garage facilities to change it and the team would like to say a big thank you to all involved for their help.

The rally, which was to be the first championship round for Cameron and his new co driver Lee Taylor, started early on Saturday morning. The pair immediately gelled as a team and, on the opening stage, set the fastest time in the Fiesta ST Trophy class. This continued for the remaining two stages up to the first service halt in Penrith, where the team carried out its routine checks and were pleased to report there were no issues with the car whatsoever.

Four more stages were then tackled, with Cameron and Lee going on to set three more fastest times stages, even though they suffered from a puncture towards the end of stage six. Consequently, they returned to the second service halt leading the Fiesta ST Trophy by 24-seocnds.

Again, service went according to plan and Cameron and Lee set off for the final stage of the rally intending to consolidate their lead. However, halfway through the stage they hit a pot hole very hard and the car’s engine began to misfire. This forced Cameron to ease off to ensure they got to the end of the stage and could complete the short road section back to the finish in Penrith.

Cameron and Lee were delighted their first Championship rally together saw them win their class in the Fiesta ST Trophy by 21 seconds and claim an overall position of 22nd in a field of 111 cars. Even though they missed the first round of the championship, Cameron now lies third in the Fiesta ST Trophy standings, with Lee second co driver.

Preparations are now underway for the next round of the Fiesta ST Trophy and the BTRDA Rally Series, the Somerset Stages, which takes place on Saturday 16th April.
